சித்திரை பௌர்ணமி (Chithirai Pournami) is a festival celebrated by Tamil people all over the world, particularly in Tamil Nadu, India, on the full moon day (Pournami) in the Tamil month of Chithirai (April-May). It is also known as Chithirai Vishu or Tamil New Year in some parts of Tamil Nadu.
The festival is associated with the Hindu god Lord Muruga, who is considered to be the patron deity of Tamil people. It is believed that on this day, Lord Muruga was married to Valli, a tribal girl, in a grand ceremony in the hills of Palani.
On this day, Tamil people observe fasts and offer special prayers and poojas in Murugan temples, such as the famous Palani Murugan Temple and the Murugan temple in Tiruchendur. In the evening, processions are taken out in some places with the deities of Lord Muruga and his consorts being carried on decorated chariots or palanquins.
Chithirai Pournami is also a time for cultural celebrations, with various folk dances and performances being held in different parts of the world where Tamil people live. The festival is an occasion for Tamil people to come together and celebrate their rich cultural heritage, and to seek the blessings of Lord Muruga for a prosperous and happy life.
